International migrant stock (% of population)

This indicator measures the proportion of individuals residing in a country who were born elsewhere, providing insight into global migration patterns, including the status of refugees. The figures are primarily derived from population censuses, focusing on the foreign-born demographic—those who live in one country despite originating from another. In instances where direct data on the foreign-born is lacking, estimates are extrapolated from the foreign population, encompassing individuals who do not hold citizenship in the host country. Notably, significant historical events, such as the 1991 dissolution of the Soviet Union, influenced migration dynamics, as many people became classified as international migrants. The metric can be refined through various statistical methods, such as interpolation and extrapolation, to create a clearer picture of changing migration trends over time. Source:
